Cats Can Play A Special Role In Our Lives, Even If They Are Not Ours. Numerous strays can be seen in various locations. Despite having no owners, these cats survive because of the kindness of strangers who take it upon themselves to care for them and provide them with food and shelter.
The sheer number of stray cats in Istanbul stands out, but so does the degree to which they are incorporated into daily life—to the point where a documentary film named Kedi was made about them.
With her laid-back attitude, one stray cat stood out from the others wandering the Turkish city, and the town ensured that she would be remembered for years to come.
The residents’ favorite street cat was the term “tombili,” which refers to plump cats in traditional Turkish. Tombili was a cat who, with her plump physique and her habit of lounging on the pavement, gave off the impression that she had it all figured out
She gained even more notoriety as images of her iconic pose surfaced online. There’s something so sympathetic about this cat.
Tombili remained a well-liked figure. She often received visits from people at her usual spot on the Kadıköy sidewalk, where she lounged carelessly.
Despite having a happy life, Tombili tragically died on August 1, 2016.
While the majority of stray cats would go unnoticed, Istanbul residents chose to honor Tombili’s legacy as a prominent figure in the Turkish stray cat community since she was such an integral part of the neighborhood:

Townspeople who were distraught started a Change.org petition to erect a statue in honor of the well-known stray.
“We wish that Tombili, the neighborhood’s 11-year-old mascot whose reputation has spread beyond Kadıköy, is remembered and not forgotten in a similar manner,” the petition reads.
After the campaign’s success, artist Seval Şahin offered to create the statue. It showed Tombili in her signature pose and was set in her usual spot.
The Statue Was Unveiled on October 4, World Animal Protection Day.
It acts as a location where people may go and reflect on their past relationships with people and animals.
